THE HOWARD MEMORIAL HALL
A longstanding community heritage
The hall has been at the heart of community life in Wigmore since prominent Freemason Lord Darnley laid the foundation stone on the 29th of April 1925.
In the latter part of the 1930s, the building became a mission church dedicated to St Mathew. And in 1952, an extension was added, which is now the Masonic temple.
Local builders Charles and Ron Howard later bought the property as a home for their company sports and social club, and the church part of the building was leased to the lodge for a peppercorn rent to use as a temple.
On the 3rd of December 1975, Ron Howard generously gave the whole property in trust to the lodge in the name of the Durobrivae Lodge Benevolent Fund.
A new LOI room was added in 1991, with the bar extension and seating area dedicated to Shirley Howard, wife of Ron.
The building is nowadays both a Masonic lodge and a much valued community hall, offering its excellent facilities for public hire to non-masonic groups, organisations and local community members.
